1080i vs 1080p

I bought a Sony HDTV in 2006, it was marked as 1080i. Today, most HDTV is marked as 1080p. For lots of people (include me), there is a question:

What is the different between 1080i vs. 1080p HDTV?

Carrying this question, I did some researches through the internet. Here is what I found:

Assuming the above picture is a 40 inch LCD TV
1080i resolution = 1920x1080 pixels
1080p resolution = 1920x1080 pixels
so , the 1080i and 1080p HDTV have same resolution.

How does the 1080i and 1080p work?

1080i conveys the images in an interlaced format. The fields in 1080i are composed of 540 odd fields and 540 event fields from top to bottom. But 1080p use 1080 fields in whole. For 1080i, the odd fields display first, then the even fields display second. The 1080p, the all fields display in same time.

In theoretically, a 1080p HDTV is better than 1080i HDTV. For a normal user, there is really No big difference between 1080i and 1080p. Comparing a 1080i HDTV to 1080p HDTV, you would not missing any resolution from the Blu-ray or HD DVD source
